My Experience with THC: A Journey from Scepticism to Relief
In my early 40s, a family member introduced me to THC after over-the-counter codeine was no longer available in Australia. Initially, I was hesitant, somewhat down on the idea of "needing" something like THC to get through life. However, after experimenting with it, I was able to get a prescription, and now I have it delivered right to my door! This shift in perspective has had a significant impact on my pain management and mental health.
Using THC helped me realise what it's truly like to have a quieter head. Before that, I didn’t even know what real relaxation felt like. I’ve come to understand that I had been carrying so much tension and stress without even recognising it. I don't want to live a life constantly wound up and stressed, nor do I want to die the way my mum did. THC has given me the space to relax in a way I had never allowed myself before.
The Types of THC: Understanding How It Works
THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the psychoactive compound found in cannabis. There are two main types of THC used in medical cannabis:
Delta-9 THC: The most common form, known for its ability to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and promote relaxation.
Delta-8 THC: A milder form of THC that provides similar effects but with less intensity, often preferred by those looking for relief without the stronger psychoactive effects.
In Australia, the rules surrounding medical cannabis are clear but strict. THC is available via prescription for specific medical conditions, and doctors must follow a strict protocol to ensure it’s suitable for patients. For many like myself, it's become a life-changing alternative for managing pain and mental health conditions.
My current THC Choices: Girl Scout Cookies and Superbly Sunny
For my health concerns, I have found two particular strains of THC that work wonders:
Girl Scout Cookies: This strain helps me with body pain, including conditions like my lower back injury, neck injury, upper back scoliosis, and fibromyalgia. What I love about this strain is that it relaxes the body while keeping the mind clear, which is crucial for someone with ADHD like me who needs focus but also relief from chronic pain. Girl Scout Cookies is known for its strong relaxation properties, making it ideal for pain relief without clouding mental clarity.
Superbly Sunny: This strain has been my go-to for mental health. Superbly Sunny is uplifting and energizing due to its lemon terpenes, which provide a refreshing boost to both mood and motivation. I struggle with ADHD, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and poor motivation, and Superbly Sunny helps me feel motivated and happy. Its citrusy terpenes not only make me feel more focused but also lift my spirits, allowing me to take a break from the constant tension my body and mind hold.
Reflecting on Health and Balance
After my mum passed away from bowel cancer in 2019, I realized I’d made the right choice to give my mind, body, and soul a little respite. Using THC helped me understand just how much I was carrying mentally and physically. I hadn’t been relaxing at all. Taking a break from that constant stress has been essential for my overall health, allowing me to finally decompress and find some peace.
That said, THC doesn’t completely take away my pain. I still take preventative meds for fibromyalgia and magnesium for pain relief. A week without magnesium made me realize how crucial it is in my pain management routine. The combination of THC and magnesium, along with other treatments, works together to help me manage day-to-day discomfort and mental health challenges.
Using a Dry Herb Vape: Why It's My Method of Choice
I use a dry herb vape for my THC consumption, which provides a much milder experience than traditional smoking methods. By vaporizing the dry herb, I avoid the smoke and carcinogens that come with combustion. This method feels clean and efficient, allowing me to enjoy the benefits without the harsher side effects associated with smoking.(The preferred Medical method)
Driving with THC in Australia: Know the Law
In Australia, it is illegal to drive with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound in cannabis, in your system, even if you have a prescription for medicinal cannabis. Unlike alcohol, where there is a legal blood concentration limit, there is a zero-tolerance policy for THC in most states and territories. My doctor recommends waiting 8-12 hours after using THC before driving.
The industry is advocating for changes to these laws, as driving after using THC, in controlled doses and with medical guidance, could be considered similar to driving with Valium or codeine in your system—both of which are legal yet still impairing substances that are hard to get hold of. Despite these efforts, current laws remain strict, and driving with any trace of THC can result in fines, license suspension, or criminal charges. Always consult your doctor and be aware of local laws to stay compliant.
