Like many people, I’ve used organic cacao for years – mainly for its rich taste and natural, unprocessed qualities. But recently, I started noticing a lot online about “cacao ceremonies” and “ceremonial cacao.” This piqued my interest. Could I use my organic cacao to create a similar mindful experience, or was there something uniquely different about ceremonial cacao? Here’s what I learned as I researched deeper into this topic.
What’s the Difference? Ceremonial Cacao vs. Organic Cacao
The terms "ceremonial cacao" and "organic cacao" might sound interchangeable, but they have distinct differences in how they’re prepared, priced, and used.
The Growing and Preparation Process:
Ceremonial Cacao: This cacao is grown, harvested, and prepared with a lot of manual care and intention. Many small-scale farms follow traditional Indigenous methods, preserving the plant’s energy and nutritional value. The beans are often sun-dried (not roasted) to retain the cacao’s natural fats, and they’re stone-ground into a thick paste rather than a powder. This leaves the cacao in its pure, rich form.
Organic Cacao: Organic cacao beans are still grown without chemicals and are minimally processed, so they’re healthier than processed cocoa. However, organic cacao powder is often roasted and ground, which can remove some of the cacao butter and slightly reduce its nutrients. It’s a fantastic product, but it doesn’t hold the same cultural and ritual significance as ceremonial cacao.
Cost Differences:
Because ceremonial cacao requires more manual handling and careful preparation, it tends to be more expensive than organic cacao. You're paying for the hands-on care and the intention that goes into each batch. Organic cacao, while still high quality, is usually more affordable and easier to find.
The Intention Behind the Product:
Ceremonial cacao is often considered sacred, prepared with love and respect, with a specific intention to be used in spiritual ceremonies and rituals. This intentional energy is believed to amplify its impact, making it feel more like a “medicine” for the soul.
Organic cacao, on the other hand, is a pure, quality ingredient meant more for general consumption. But this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a mindful experience with it.
A Glimpse into a Cacao Ceremony
In a traditional cacao ceremony, ceremonial cacao is prepared by melting it with water and sometimes adding natural sweeteners, spices, or herbs. Participants gather to drink the cacao, often in a circle, and set intentions, meditate, or share gratitude. The goal is to connect with oneself and others, allowing the cacao to “open the heart” and deepen the experience.
Honouring and Using Organic Cacao in Your Own Ritual
While organic cacao doesn’t carry the same ritualistic background, it can still be used mindfully to create your own ceremony. Here’s how to enjoy a similar experience:
Set an Intention: Take a moment before preparing your drink to reflect on what you want to invite into your day. Smell the cacao and express gratitude for it, appreciating its richness and the energy it offers.
Mindful Preparation: Prepare your organic cacao slowly and thoughtfully, focusing on each step. Stirring, smelling, and sipping can all become mindful acts.
Give Thanks: Thank the cacao before drinking, acknowledging the simple gift of being present in the moment.
While ceremonial cacao may offer a culturally rich experience, organic cacao can be just as nourishing when used with respect and intention.
Where to Source Ceremonial and Organic Cacao
Ceremonial Cacao: Look for ceremonial cacao from companies that work with small Indigenous farmers, prioritising traditional methods and fair trade. Many ceremonial cacaos are sold online by businesses that offer insight into their sourcing and preparation.
Organic Cacao: You can find organic cacao at health food stores, online, and even some supermarkets. Just check that it’s unsweetened, minimally processed, and certified organic for the best quality.
How Cacao Benefits Us: Science and Spirit
Cacao is packed with theobromine, a mild stimulant that improves focus without the jitteriness of caffeine. It also contains anandamide (known as the "bliss molecule"), which can boost mood. Nutritionally, cacao is rich in magnesium, iron, and antioxidants, supporting both physical and mental well-being.
Metaphysically, cacao is often associated with heart-opening and grounding energies. Many believe that cacao helps us connect to our emotions and fosters a sense of community. Whether ceremonial or organic, cacao can play a role in supporting mindfulness, relaxation, and connection.
I can personally vouch for cacao’s uplifting qualities! At times, I’ve carried a small ziplock bag of organic cacao in my purse just to sniff when I need a quick mood boost. The aroma alone brings a sense of calm and happiness – a simple yet powerful way to enjoy cacao’s benefits on the go.
Other Ways to Practice Mindfulness
If a cacao ceremony doesn’t feel right for you, there are other simple ways to practice mindfulness:
Gratitude Journaling: Take five minutes to write down things you’re grateful for each day. Focusing on the positive, however small, can shift your mindset and brighten your mood.
Mindful Breathing: Set aside a few moments to focus on your breath, noticing each inhale and exhale. This simple practice brings calm and centres the mind.
Grounding Outdoors: Spend time in nature, fully engaging with your senses and surroundings. Walking barefoot, smelling the fresh air, or even just sitting on the ground helps you reconnect and recharge.
Whether you choose ceremonial cacao or organic cacao, the real magic lies in the intention you bring. Both forms offer a beautiful opportunity to pause, connect, and savour the present moment.
Side Note on Journaling: I’ve found that journaling the frustrating or “shitty” stuff rather than venting to others does two things: 1) it feels as if the person your negative energy is aimed at actually hears you, which gives a sense of relief, and 2) it keeps your negative thoughts and energy from spreading to others, protecting your relationships. And, as a light-hearted bonus, journaling has done wonders for both my heart/mind and my spelling skills! Enjoy your hot Chocolate! -Ang x
