How Different Versions of You Impact the World Around You

Have you ever wondered how others perceive you during fleeting interactions? It’s a thought that hit me recently at a wedding, where I realised how much context and comfort shape the version of me people experience.

Some get my relaxed, authentic self—the one ready for deep conversations. Others, particularly strangers, might get the awkward, flustered version, especially since small talk isn’t my forte. In fact, after a four-year hiatus from casual mingling, I even asked a teenager for a refresher on small talk while working at the Royal Show last year!

When Words Leave a Mark

The wedding left me deeply reflective. A casual conversation a few months ago revealed that something I’d said years ago, likely in a moment of thoughtlessness, had shaped someone’s negative perception of me. I’d made a snippy comment—unintentionally, I might add—that stuck with them for years.

It was humbling to realise how a single sentence can linger, causing hurt without my knowledge. Thankfully, we cleared the air, and by the end of our chat, we were hugging. But it reminded me that we all leave impressions, often unknowingly.

The Ripple Effect of Energy

Our words and energy extend beyond the immediate moment. Stress, frustration, or venting can impact those around us—even if we don’t intend it. For years, I didn’t realise how much others’ venting added to my anxiety until I learned Reiki. Now, I notice how stress transfers from one person to another, like a ripple in a pond.

Have you ever been around someone venting their frustration and felt your mood plummet? It’s a reminder to be mindful of the energy we project.

The Science of Emotional Contagion

Research shows that emotions are contagious. Psychologists call this phenomenon emotional contagion, where people unconsciously mimic and absorb others’ feelings. This means your stress, anger, or joy can influence the emotional state of those around you.

This is why it’s essential to manage your stress and negative emotions—not only for your own well-being but also for the well-being of those in your orbit.

Negative Energy and Aura Cleansing

While our emotions and words ripple outward, negative energy often lingers closer to home—right in our own aura. This invisible energy field surrounds our body, acting as both a shield and a sponge. When we're exposed to stress, negativity, or even our own unresolved emotions, this energy can stagnate and weigh us down, affecting our mood, clarity, and overall well-being.

Signs of Negative Energy in Your Aura:

  • Feeling drained or "off" without a clear reason.

  • Experiencing frequent mood swings or irritability.

  • Struggling with focus or creativity.

  • Attracting more negative situations or people into your life.

Cleansing Your Aura: Just as we cleanse our bodies, our energy field needs regular care to stay clear and vibrant. Here are some simple yet powerful ways to release negative energy from your aura:

  • Salt Baths: Sea salt or Epsom salt baths help draw out negativity and leave you feeling refreshed. Add a few drops of essential oils like lavender for extra relaxation.

  • Smudging: Use sage, palo santo, or other cleansing herbs to energetically clear your aura. Simply wave the smoke around your body, starting from the top of your head to your feet.

  • Breathwork and Visualisation: Imagine a golden or white light surrounding you, cleansing away any lingering negativity. Deep breathing enhances this process, helping to shift stuck energy.

  • Reiki or Energy Healing: These practices are excellent for deep, energetic detoxification, allowing your aura to return to its natural state of balance and flow.

Why It Matters: When your aura is clear, you're better able to project positive, uplifting energy to others. This creates a cycle of high-vibration exchanges, enhancing not only your personal well-being but also the emotional environment around you. By regularly cleansing your energy, you break the cycle of stress and negativity, ensuring that the ripple effect you send into the world is one of positivity, inspiration, and joy.

Practical Tips for Managing Stress and Energy

1. Check Yourself

Next time you feel overwhelmed, take a moment to assess how your energy might be affecting others. A simple glance in the mirror can reveal if your face looks tense, angry, or upset. Recognising it is the first step.

2. Practice Journaling

Journaling can be a powerful tool for processing emotions. Write as if you’re speaking directly to the person who upset you. This allows you to vent without hurting anyone and lets go of built-up frustration.

3. Learn Basic Breathing Exercises

To self-calm and reset your energy, try this simple breathing technique:

  • Inhale deeply for a count of four.

  • Hold your breath for four counts.

  • Exhale slowly for a count of six.

  • Repeat this for a few minutes to feel grounded and refreshed.

4. Turn Negative Conversations Positive

When someone begins venting to you, gently steer the conversation toward solutions or positive topics. For example, “That sounds tough—what’s one thing you’re looking forward to this week?”

Growing Through Awareness

ADHD and flustered moments are part of my reality, but I’ve learned to take responsibility for how I leave others feeling. Whether it’s reaching out to clarify a misunderstood conversation or genuinely connecting through social media, small steps help us all grow.

This year, I’ve committed to being more intentional. If I sense someone misunderstood me, I follow up. If I’ve been stressed, I reflect on how it might have affected others.

Be the Best Version of Yourself

Life is a series of interactions, and every moment is a chance to leave someone feeling better. By being mindful of our words, managing our energy, and practising self-awareness, we can all grow into the best versions of ourselves—and help others do the same.

Let’s aim to be observant, compassionate, and intentional. After all, everyone gets a different version of you. Why not make it the best one?

Incorporating mindfulness practices like journaling and breathing exercises into your daily routine can help you manage your energy and communicate more effectively. By doing so, you not only enrich your own life but also uplift those around you.
